THE CHALLENGE
The utility company was challenges with leveraging AMI data from smart meters with external data sources to effectively manage events, alerts, and communications. They faced latency issues with their data download and analysis leading to inefficiencies in operations. There was lack of visibility into the electrical network performance down to transformers. Lastly, the complexity of correlating SCADA data with AMI data to receive a clear view of outage reporting was a problem.

THE SOLUTION
PG&E partnered with OSI Consulting & GE Digital (formerly Bit Stew Systems) to implement a rapid data ingestion and integration platform purpose-built for the IIoT. The IIoT platform was designed to enable the customer to geospatially visualize, triage and initiate mitigation on devices experiencing critical events or high frequency events (PON, PRN, Inversion, Tamper, etc.) across the entire meter population.

THE RESULT
PG&E partnered with OSI Consulting & Bit Stew (now part of GE) to implement a rapid data ingestion and integration platform purpose-built for the IIoT.
- Efficiently triage hundreds of millions of data elements every day
- Gained over 20% efficiency from daily insights on critical events by reducing analysis time from days to hours
- Efficiently managed 400-500 million data element per day from the AMI system
- Significantly reduced the number of human operators dealing with significant volume and variety of events from 850 K smart meters
